The easiest way to learn the Spelling Code is to map words, or play with mapped words!

The Spelling Code Checker is a Code Mapping® test designed to measure a teacher’s speed and accuracy in identifying phonemes and gaphemes in real words. It shows how quickly and precisely teachers of spelling can identify the graphemes (letters) and the phonemes that map to them in written words. This knowledge directly affects a teacher’s ability to support learners' phonemic awareness and orthographic learning – the foundation of reading and spelling.
How well is your Spelling Brain functioning. Is it ready to teach spelling?
If you are a school leader, you may wish to ask your teachers to complete the test without seeing it in advance. Before, during, and after Spelling Brain Teacher Training, we assess teachers’ grapheme and phoneme identification skills so they can track how quickly their linguistic knowledge is developing – the word mapping knowledge needed to teach spelling effectively, with or without a programme.
We also invite parents to complete the training if their child is not yet reading fluently or spelling with confidence and independence. The only prerequisite is that you can read and have the MyWordz® tech. You might even find your own spelling improves!
Thank you, Spencer, for checking the Spelling Code for us!
Spelling is not a minor concern. It is central to reading success. Across the world, students are falling behind in spelling, which limits their ability to decode, recognise words, and read with fluency. The Science of Spelling (SOS) offers a practical, research-informed way forward. Teachers are supported to map words clearly and systematically, using precise phoneme–grapheme correspondences. We are shaping spelling brains
Grounded in the Science of Spelling, and guided by Speech Sound Mapping and Orthographic Mapping Theory, this supports confident spelling and fluent reading. No guessing. No memorising. Just visible, teachable code.

Do You Need Spelling Brain Training? Checking Letter–Sound Processing Speed!
During Spelling Brain Training, we are not approaching the whole code as something we explicitly teach; it serves as a reference tool for learners and teachers.
When mapping words quickly for children, you will see first-hand what an opaque orthography is – something you do not have to think about as a skilled reader. Becoming conscious of the mapping helps you make the code visible to your students and means you will be blinded by the letters far less often.
Spelling: The Missing Key to Reading Success
Reading and spelling are two sides of the same coin — but in classrooms, spelling often gets left behind.
We know that learning to read involves linking sounds (phonemes) with letters (graphemes). But what many people don’t realise is that spelling is actually harder than decoding, and it has even more potential to improve reading. Yet, it receives far less attention in daily instruction.
Why? Because teaching spelling is hard. Every child brings a different accent, different speech patterns, and different gaps in knowledge. Most teachers weren’t trained to break words down into their speech sounds, especially when a child’s pronunciation doesn’t match the phonics programme. That’s where MyWordz® comes in.
MyWordz® – Make the Spelling Code Visible
MyWordz® is the first bi-directional word mapping tool designed with dyslexia in mind. It already maps over 20,000 words, showing the phonemes and graphemes clearly.
You can:
-
Search for any word
-
See the speech sounds (with Phonemies®) and spelling patterns
-
Hear the word read aloud
-
Check your own mapping
-
Drag it into your personal spelling binder
If a word isn’t in the database yet – help us grow! Add your own.
Spell in Context – Not with Lists
The best way to learn to spell is to write what you want to say.
Choose your own words. Map them. Store them. Use them.
-
Not sure how a word sounds? Say it aloud into the mic.
MyWordz® will show you the mapped version instantly. -
Want to spell from scratch? Use Duck Hands to segment the word, then type it using Phonemies® in MySpeekie®.
Map it and drag it into your binder to store the learning. -
Already know the sounds? Just type the Phonemies® and see if you got the correct spelling.
Use Check Mapping to confirm, then save it with Map and Drag.
Every time a word is mapped, it builds your orthographic lexicon — your brain’s word bank.
Secure Spelling with Monster Routine and Spelling Mats
To really lock in the learning:
